Fastest 40 times among potential Eagles CB and safety prospects at the 2024 NFL Combine

Might the Eagles go fishing for defensive back reinforcements in the 2024 NFL Draft? If so, they'll certainly find some burners.

Aaah... The collapse... Almost two months after the Philadelphia Eagles' final game, the collapse weighs heavy on our minds. Heck, six years from now, Philly might be sitting on another Super Bowl win, and now and again, we'll still think about how the 2023-2024 NFL season ended.

The reasons are what we discuss most often. There was a defensive coordinator coup d'é·tat. That may have been spearheaded by certain influential defensive players determining they would give Sean Desai the silent treatment.

Theories about civil unrest aside, one thing can't be denied. There were times where this defense looked old and slow. Howie Roseman and his staff will use this offseason to cure that. We suggest adding to the secondary's cupboard.

Avonte Maddox and Zech McPhearson are in contract seasons. Josh Jobe, Eli Ricks, Mekhi Garner, and Mario Goodrich have much to prove. Bradley Roby wasn't much of a stabilizing force. Philly may have something with Kelee Ringo, but admittedly, we know little about Tiawan Mullen.

Darius Slay and James Bradberry are now a year older, and we had concerns about their age last offseason. A youth movement and investing some draft capital into Philly's secondary would be ideal.

Speed isn't everything, but it helps! There are some burners in this draft and that would help fix the 'old and slow' issue. Here's a look at the fastest 40 times recorded by the cornerbacks who ran at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine.

Fastest 40 times among safety prospects

Reed Blankenship is already in a contract season, and even though we love him, he's limited. That can sometimes happen when your best safety is a former undrafted rookie free agent. To his credit, he earned a lot of Pro Bowl votes, so the Eagles have something in him that they may want to keep developing.

Sydney Brown may miss some time at the start of the coming regular season which makes Tristin McCollum potentially the second-best safety on the roster now that Kevin Byard is gone. Yeah, we'd say it's time to invest in the safety position with some draft capital.

If the Eagles want to field a better secondary, they have to begin investing significant early draft capital into the cornerback and safety positions more often. They may also want to rely less often on the theory of adding defensive backs so late in the offseason.

It has worked from time to time. See James Bradberry and C.J. Gardner-Johnson, but if there were any time that Philly would want to buck the trend, this would probably be the year to do so.
