Joe Carter: End

The first documented player to wear the number 17 as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles was Joe Carter. He made his name as an end who was part of the organization for eight seasons (1933-1940).

Carter appeared in 78 games with 72 starts. He began his career by wearing the number 31 jersey for two seasons but made the move to the number 17 ensemble in 1935.

Carter was the NFL's co-leader in receptions for the 1934 season He hauled in a whopping 16 receptions. Hey it was a different time then. For his career, he hauled in 114 receptions for 1,810 yards, and 21 trips to the end zone.

Joe Carter retired in 1945 after spending some time with the Green Bay Packers, the Brooklyn Tigers, and the Chicago Bears. He was the final member of the original Eagles roster to leave the organization after he moved on after the 1940 season. He earned an All-Star nod in 1939. He's one of those guys we should discuss more often.
