Player movement between Eagles and Commanders hasn't helped either side recently
And, you thought this might be a quiet Thursday afternoon and evening... Shame on you! Heck... Shame on us! 16 Philadelphia Eagles training camp practices are in the books. The final session that would be open to the media came and went on Wednesday. The rest of the work week was pretty much set in stone... or so we thought. Wouldn't you know it? Howie Roseman goes and makes a move.
Thursday and Friday were supposed to provide the backdrop to two team walkthroughs. Then, some breaking news came around lunchtime. Philly had acquired former Penn State Nittany Lion Jahan Dotson via a trade. They sent a 2025 third-round draft choice and two 2025 seventh-round draft choices to the Washington Commanders. The Birds also receive a 2025 fifth-rounder in the deal.
Dotson's presence is bad news for some of the young roster hopefuls. It's safe to say, based on the resources Howie burned to acquire him, that he's probably a lock to make the roster, He certainly alters the offensive depth chart.
He's a low-risk, high-reward signing. This could be fun, but let's hope he changes a recent trend.
Things haven't gone well recently when players leave Washington to join the Eagles' nest.
The Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles are celebrating their 93rd and 92nd seasons respectively. If you look at the 2024 Commanders roster, you're certainly see some familiar names.
Brian Johnson, Philly's offensive coordinator last season and the Birds' QB coach in 2021 and 2022, is now the Commanders' assistant head coach and offensive pass game coordinator. There are also former Birds players on Washington's depth chart.
Marcus Mariota, Olamide Zaccheaus, Julian Good-Jones, and Zach Ertz joined the Commanders during the most recent offseason. Fortunately for us, except for O.Z., it's hard to imagine any of those guys providing any impact.
But, if you have been paying attention. That has been commonplace recently when players have left one franchise for another. Thankfully, that's been more of a problem for the Commanders than our Eagles.
Offensive lineman Nick Gates and tight end Armani Rogers were both added this offseason. They probably won't make the roster, but we could also point to Ryan Kerrigan. Before joining the Commanders' caoching staff in 2022, he failed in Philly after the Birds signed him to a one-year deal on May 17, 2021.
He certainly terrorized our Eagles though. Somewhere Halapoulivaati Vaitai is still having nightmares about him.
Kerrigan wasn't the only former Washington star who flopped in Philly. There was that Zach Brown signing. He signed a one-year, $3 million deal with expectations that he'd be the starter. We thought he might have a chance to start, and he did, six games before he was released on October 14th.
Washington has had their share of misses with former Eagles too. DeSean Jackson worked out for them for a while and helped them out some, but there was the Donovan McNabb thing. We won't even get into Ronald Darby, Richard Rogers Carson Wentz, Casey Toohill, Wendell Smallwood, Domonique Rodgers-Cromartie, and Marcus Smith.
Yes, Marcus Smith had a brief stint with Washington in 2018. They also employed a former Eagles linebackers coach, Ron Rivera. Boy... Ron Rivera...
None of that has anything to do with Jahan Dotson joining the Eagles' roster, nor will it have anything to do with whether he suceeds or fails. We just wanted you to know that there's some bad mojo working here. Let's hope Jahan breaks the jinx.
