The Eagles rumor mill may begin churning again after Bill Belichick's next visit
As is the case with most sports legends, Bill Belichick's name means different things to different people. Some view him as the best to ever coach an NFL team. Others believe his story plays out differently if he doesn't have Tom Brady. Philadelphia Eagles fans are skeptical about whether or not he cheated in some way and stole a Vince Lombardi Trophy from them.
Yes, we all know who he is, and we're well-versed in the resume. His New England Patriots were a dynasty within a dynasty within a dynasty.
The Birds have met Coach Belichick's Patriots on football's grandest stage twice. Philly dropped one (Super Bowl XXXIX). They came out on top in the other (Super Bowl LII). It would have been nice to enjoy a rubber match, one to break the tie. For now, however, we'll just have to settle for rumors and random fantasies about his hire as Eagles head coach.
Bill Belichick will be at the Eagles game in Week 2. We beg you to avoid listening to peer pressure.
What's that? Oh you missed the 'Belichick to the Eagles' thing. Here's where things ventured off the railing a little. There were these conversations about Nick Sirianni's job security at the close of last season, but Coach was granted another year to prove himself, as he should have been. That didn't stop the rumor mill from churning though.
At about the same time, give or take a few weeks, Belichick's tenure in Foxborough ended. He didn't earn another opportunity during the offseason, but most believe he'll be back on the sideline at some point. And, there are rumors that Philly has been and is one of his potential suitors.
Can you see how messy football gets sometimes?
Belichick was recently a guest on ESPN's The Pat McAfee Show. He's smiling more than we have ever seen, and he seems to believe he has won Eagles and Indianapolis Colts fans over.
You saw that second clip, right? Coach Belichick will be featured on ESPN's Manningcast during Monday Night Football in Week 2. That one features a standalone game played between the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons.
He'll be live at the stadium. We won't be shocked if he's on the field or at a practice session. We certainly won't be shocked if that stokes a few flames and births new rumors about his eventual landing on Philly's sideline.
Don't blame the messengers. We're just telling you how these things work. This is Philly. These are the most passionate (and sometimes crazy) fans in the NFL. If anything goes awry, we may hear rumors that he is potentially next in line for a job Nick Sirianni hasn't lost.
Stay tuned anyway. Something tells us this story still has a few twists and turns remaining. We beg of you though. Rise above the temptation to follow the peer pressure. Rumors about NIck Sirianni's firing are the last thing this team needs right now.
