Truth be told, we were prepared to write this story. We've constantly beaten the drum that you don't hire worse coaches because you're afraid the better options will leave. It's always wise to assemble the best staff possible. If an assistant is hired as a coach elsewhere, so be it. The Philadelphia Eagles are used to having their cupboard raided. Since 2018 alone, we've lost two damn good offensive coordinators in Frank Reich (2018's offseason) and Shane Steichen (2023 offseason).
Now, Shane and Frank both wound up in Indianapolis with the Colts. So, maybe there's another angle there we haven't explored. Either that or Indy needs to promote itself as an Eagles minor league team.
We're teasing of course, sort of, but as days pass, something has crossed our radar. Kellen Moore may be on his way to a head-coaching gig of his own.
Ranking Kellen Moore's possible landing spots from 'no big deal' to nightmarish Eagles scenarios.
By now, you've probably heard the news. If not, here's the update. Kellen Moore is scheduled to interview with three NFL teams about their head-coaching vacancies this weekend. That includes one with a rival.
e Dallas Cowboys as a "top candidate" for their head-coaching vacancy on Friday, January 17. He also interviews with the Jacksonville Jaguars that same day before speaking with another interested franchise on Saturday.
Don't worry. He's focused on the Divisional Round, but just for kicks, let's rank the possible landing spots we have heard are real options.
1. Dallas Cowboys - The worst-case scenario for Philadelphia
We don't fear any NFL team, but seeing Kellen Moore in Dallas does make us nervous. We didn't want him earning the head coaching job when he was there the first time.
Under his watch as Cowboys OC, Dallas ranked second in scoring (27.7 PPG) and total offense (391.0 net YPG). They were also fourth in passing offense (264.4 net YPG) and seventh in rushing offense (126.6 YPG) over that span.
Dallas won two NFC East titles and made the postseason three times while winning five of eight meetings with Philadelphia.
2. New Orleans Saints - This probably isn't as bad as seeing Kellen wind up in Dallas.
While we wouldn't call the Saints an extended rival, something about this team irritates us, except when they are duped by Howie Roseman or they hand Philly guys like C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Zack Baun.
If Kellen lands in the Big easy, he'd have to figure out how he's going to find himself a QB, but Philly wouldn't see him as often as they would if he landed in Dallas.
How about shipping him off to an AFC team?
3. Jacksonville Jaguars - No big deal here. Move along. There's nothing to see.
There's part of us that's interested in what Trevor Lawrence might look like if Moore got his hands on him. Correct us if we're wrong though. Wasn't Doug Pederson supposed to fix Trevor Lawrence too?
No disrespect is intended. We just believe we are stating what some of you are already thinking. Jacksonville just can't put a consistent winner together, and Trevor Lawrence, despite the continuing hype, might just be bad at football.
If Kellen Moore landed in Duval County, it wouldn't matter much to the Eagles. Philly would only see the Jags once every four years unless they cross paths in a Super Bowl.
