"Ja’Kobi Lane has been the star of the show at Baltimore Ravens training camp. It’s really taking him no time at all to take people’s breath away. He’s looking like a superstar out there."
That clearly sounds like a warning being fired by Ebony Bird's Connor Burke about one of the players the Philadelphia Eagles will have to face in the preseason opener.
By all accounts, Lane has been dominating Ravens training camp, making highlight plays every day. As a third-round pick, he looks like he's going to be a great NFL player for a long time at the pace he is going.
So, Eagles fans are wondering, "Why should I care about Lane when this is only a preseason game?" Last year's performance from the cornerbacks not named Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean should be every reason to care.
Eagles' backup corners might be in trouble against Ravens rookie Ja'Kobi Lane
While Mitchell and DeJean are All-Pros with nothing to worry about, Riq Woolen is a new starter who has performed well at OTAs and training camp. It's not clear whether any of the three will play in the preseason game against the Ravens, but it's safer to assume not.
That means the backups will most likely have to cover Lane. For the Eagles, the main ones to focus on are Jonathan Jones, Kelee Ringo, Jakorian Bennett, and Mac McWilliams.
Eagles fans know all too well about Ringo and how frustrating a talent he is. At 6-foot-4, Ringo should be a great corner, but last year he posted a Pro Football Focus grade of 55.3, ranking 86th out of 114 NFL corners and allowing 15 yards per reception. That was one experiment at CB2 fans would like to forget about.
Jones is a long-time NFL veteran who has started plenty of games in his career. Last year, he allowed a 60.5% completion percentage with the Washington Commanders, so the hope is that he can step up and be a reliable backup.
The Eagles traded for Bennett last season in the hopes that he could step into the CB2 role if Ringo and Adoree' Jackson failed. That never happened, with inconsistent play and injuries holding him back. A solid camp from Bennett, though, is helping him out.
McWilliams was the Eagles' fifth-round pick last year and hasn't had many chances to play yet. He appeared in just five games in 2025, but didn't allow a catch on two targets, so something to work off of there.
There is a large level of uncertainty with all four Eagles corners and whether they could step up if injuries happen, especially with Ringo, Bennett, and McWilliams. This will be their first true test of the 2026 season, and they can't afford to fail.

Ringo, Jones, Bennett, and McWilliams will be tested early and often by Lane and must be ready for the challenge. If they end up failing against a rookie, the Eagles might have some bigger problems with the secondary.
