You've probably heard, but there's been a ton of talk surrounding Super Bowl LIX and the Kansas City Chiefs' quest to secure a three-peat as Super Bowl champions. Here's what you may not have known. The Philadelphia Eagles have halted a run of three consecutive Super Bowl wins before.
We just didn't know that's what was happening at the time.
Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers are the last NFL team to three-peat, doing so by winning the 1965 NFL Championship and the first two Super Bowls. Here's the thing. They almost three-peated a second time.
Those Packers won the NFL Championship in 1961 and 1962, but before that, they were defeated by the Eagles in the 1960 NFL Championship. Philly was the only team to beat Vince Lombardi in a postseason game. Had Green Bay won, they would have completed a championship trifecta
Philly halted another three-peat decades later. Again, we didn't realize that's what was happening at the time!
Fast forward to Super Bowl LII. The Eagles beat the reigning Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. The Pats beat the Los Angeles Rams a year later. Had Philly not kept New England from becoming repeat champions, might we have seen a three-peat then?
It's possible, right? But, they didn't, so we can call this a 'Philly Special Occasion'. Did you see what we did there?
Now with Super Bowl LIX on the horizon, the Eagles have a chance to stop a third three-peat.
As it's been well-documented to this point, the Chiefs need one more win to make history with a three-peat. This would be their third Super Bowl win in a row... The Eagles are in their way, and they have halted historic runs before, even if we didn't know that's what was happening at the time.
This is our story, and we're sticking to it. Philly stopped two three-peats by beating the Packers and Patriots, and now, they can halt another. Time will tell, but an Eagles win feels like their destiny. One thing is certain. They have history on their side.
