Unsung Eagles lineman must be fueled by one trait in contract year

Following the disheartening defeat to San Francisco in last season's Wild Card matchup, Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman shed light on a critical aspect of the offseason: Assessing what to do with the incredibly talented, but recently injury-ravaged, offensive line

One name Roseman mentioned during his February appearance on The Rich Eisen Show as a reliable starter who tends to fly under the radar is guard Tyler Steen.

“We got four Pro Bowl players coming back on our offensive line, which is exciting," Roseman said. "We feel like we got some young talent there, as well. Tyler Steen will be in his second year as a starter, and we haven’t hit free agency or the draft.”

Eagles guard put forth a solid campaign fueled by consistency

Well, fast forward to the present, and the post-draft and free agency depth chart still slots Steen at that crucial right guard spot.

Rumors of a reunion with Mekhi Becton never materialized, while the draft came and went, with the Eagles selecting tackle Markel Bell in the third round and developmental piece Micah Morris at guard in the sixth round. Morris was brought in to compete, but a sixth-round shot on the Georgia mauler doesn't appear to be an imminent threat to Steen's hold on the position.

And while Steen's spot appears secure on the interior of the line, his contract status is certainly noteworthy.

Entering the final year of his four-year contract, this coming season will serve as the ultimate test to prove whether or not he belongs in the long-term picture for Philadelphia's trench unit. He's the lone starter of the five up front yet to earn a Pro Bowl nod, yet his first full season as a starter showed both consistency and reliability.

Steen's first season as a starter resulted in solid marks, per Pro Football Focus. He wrapped up the year ranked 17th of 81 qualified guards with an overall grade of 71.6, with his pass-blocking prowess (74-11th overall) grading out slightly better than his run-blocking (71.8-17th). Penalties were an issue at times for Steen, as he was flagged nine times, but overall, the campaign reflected reliability, as Steen started every game in leading the offensive group with 1,008 snaps.

Entering the 2026 season, Steen is indeed the unsung member of this highly decorated offensive line in Philadelphia. With the other four members having earned Pro Bowl honors in previous seasons, it's unrealistic to expect an entire unit to earn such accolades.

He's a steady starter, a reliable member of a unit that was hit by injuries last season. And with continued progression, Steen may just end up earning a new deal to remain in midnight green.
