Vic Fangio's update on Jonathan Greenard won't ease Eagles fans' minds

Seriously?

Leave it to Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio to get the fan base to worry about the defense.

Fangio spoke to the media before the Eagles' joint practice with the New England Patriots, when he was asked about an update on Jonathan Greenard and his pectoral injury. Well, it doesn't sound as good as it could be, as Fangio didn't have a timeline for his return and, in fact, added that he's not sure if Greenard is even going to play in Week 1 against the Washington Commanders anymore.

The Eagles traded for Greenard back in April during the draft and signed him to a four-year, $100 million contract extension. Greenard started training camp on the PUP list due to a pectoral injury he suffered while working out.

Should Eagles fans join in Vic Fangio's pessimistic view of Jonathan Greenard?

Originally, this injury was not supposed to be a concern, and now he's in jeopardy of not playing in Week 1? What has changed in the last three weeks?

It's too early to hit the panic button, but the Eagles are paying Greenard a lot of money, and so far he's delivered worry and concern. This is not a good look for a guy who missed the late part of last year with the Minnesota Vikings due to a separate injury.

When Greenard is healthy, he's a terrific player. He racked up 24.5 sacks between 2023 and 2024. Greenard also got his first Pro Bowl selection in that span as well.

If Greenard can't go for some reason, there shouldn't be too many concerns. Jalyx Hunt has looked great in training camp, and Nolan Smith Jr. can still be a good starter in the league. A.J. Epenesa has also had a strong camp and could be looking at a lot of looks in the rotation during the season.

Philly will be okay without Greenard in the short term because their young players are developing in the right way. It might even be better for him to ease into the season. Missing a game or two won't be the end of the world.

Remember, this Eagles defense is as elite as it gets, so they will be okay. Still, it's not exactly encouraging to hear Fangio feel the way he does about Greenard. It's not a good start to Greenard's Eagles career.
