Since Zach Ertz left the Philadelphia Eagles in a trade to the Arizona Cardinals, the fan base has been hoping that he would make one last return to the team.

Ertz is coming off an ACL injury he suffered last season with the Washington Commanders, as he is currently rehabbing to get back on the field. He recently commented that he wanted to retire as an Eagle and made sure to clear the air about a narrative surrounding his exit from Philly.

“I think there’s a little misconception that I wanted to leave,” Ertz said via The Philadelphia Inquirer's Jeff McLane. “I never wanted to leave. I know some fans think, ‘Oh, Zach wanted to leave.’ I said 1,000 times to Howie I did not want to leave. It’s just the nature of the business. They drafted a kid [Goedert] in the second round that was a good player, who they thought was better long term than I was gonna be.”

Zach Ertz never wanted to leave the Eagles

Ertz was a former second-round pick of the Eagles in 2013, where he would be for eight and a half seasons. He has caught 579 passes for 6,267 yards and 38 touchdowns. He played two and a half seasons with the Cardinals and the last two with the Commanders.

There are a few reasons for Ertz to come back as the Eagles fan base would love to see him in the midnight green uniform just one more time, and at the least, end his career on a one-day deal with the Eagles. One other incentive for him is that he is 11 catches away from the franchise record for career receptions, so he would love to get that record before he retires.

The chances of Ertz actually being back, though, seem to be pretty slim with how loaded the tight end room currently is. Dallas Goedert re-signed with the team, as they also have guys like Grant Calcaterra, Stone Smartt, Johnny Mundt, and Cameron Latu all competing for jobs.

When all is said and done, Ertz will go down as arguably the best tight end in franchise history, as he made an impact on the team, winning their first Super Bowl with that touchdown catch he made in the fourth quarter against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII. All Eagles fans would love to see him back with the team just one last time.
