Bacon, Eggs and Eagles – Best RB Committee In The NFL?

facebooktwitterreddit

After a chaotic offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles backfield has changed dramatically. Head coach Chip Kelly traded away the team’s star running back LeSean McCoy and they also let Chris Polk walk in free agency. But Kelly brought in more than adequate replacements in DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews. They’re both big, downhill one-cut runners that fit Kelly’s zone scheme well, especially running out of the shotgun formation. That being said, is the Eagles’ “RB committee” the best in the NFL? All that and more in this morning’s serving of Bacon, Eggs and Eagles!

Marcus Mariota hasn’t signed a contract, igniting wild Chip Kelly, Eagles trade rumorsGeoffrey C. Arnold of OregonLive.com

"Here we go again.Marcus Mariota hasn’t signed his rookie contract with the Tennessee Titans, making him just one of three players in the NFL draft who are still unsigned. Mariota is the only first-round pick who remains unsigned. Why hasn’t Mariota signed a deal? Few people outside Mariota’s inner circle and Titans management know for sure. Now, with Mariota still unsigned, there are those who think this is part of Mariota’s grand plan to be reunited with Chip Kelly in Philadelphia."

Chip Kelly: Tim Tebow improved, will competeChris Wesseling of NFL.com

"Is Chip Kelly’s dalliance with Tim Tebow more than just an offseason lark? When Tebow first signed with Philadelphia back in April, the other Eagles quarterbacks downplayed the “competition.”Mark Sanchez hinted that Tebow was merely a camp arm while Matt Barkley told reporters that his practice reps would not be affected in any way.Now that the offseason program has wrapped up, though, it seems evident that Tebow is pushing for a roster spot."

"Because the Eagles’ roster went through such a major overhaul this offseason, let’s give some thoughts about each positional group, which we’ll do today, starting with the offense.Quarterback ‘competition’In his latest press conference, Chip Kelly was asked if a Sam Bradford contract extension would effectively eliminate a quarterback competition between Bradford and Mark Sanchez. Kelly responded, “The best players are always going to play. I think that’s always been the way it has to be, and that’s the way it will be.”"

"With the Eagles’ roster having gone through such a major overhaul this offseason, we gave some thoughts about each positional group on the offensive side of the ball yesterday. Today we’ll do the same for the defense.Defensive lineRemember last offseason when everyone was killing Bennie Logan because the Saints converted a bunch of third and fourth down conversions in the 2013 playoffs? While the Eagles often got destroyed in the passing game in 2014, there’s no longer much to complain about in regard to Logan or the rest of the defensive line in the run game. Last season, the Eagles gave up just 3.7 yards per carry, which was tied for fourth best in the NFL. They also gave up first downs on 18.6% of opposing offenses’ rushes (sixth in the NFL), and they were one of just four teams not to give up a rush of over 40 yards."

It may sound a bit crazy, but I’ve got a major “man crush” on singer Ed Sheeran, but luckily for me it appears that Eagles running back DeMarco Murray is on board as well.
