Philadelphia Eagles: Chip Kelly Press Conference Notes

facebooktwitterreddit

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly spoke to the media this afternoon and gave a little bit of insight to the roster moves he made. Obviously everybody wants  to know why Tim Tebow was released, why the team decided to part ways with former fourth round pick Jaylen Watkins among other things. The roster currently sits a 52 players.

First Kelly was asked about the quarterback position, mostly Tebow. The nation is intrigued with Timmy but Chip pretty much wasn’t impressed. Tebow has been trying to improve as a passer but at the end of the day, it just wasn’t enough to earn a roster spot.

The other QB that the Philadelphia Eagles let go was third year player Matt Barkley. Matt was traded to the Arizona Cardinals for a conditional late round pick. Chip Kelly shed some more details of that trade during the press conference.

The team will also be looking for a third QB via practice squad of someone actually being on the 53 man roster. The Philadelphia Eagles will look at every option they currently have. It looks like the team does indeed want three quarterbacks on the team.

Another interesting tidbit that the media found interesting was the release of corner Jaylen Watkins. Obviously it isn’t good when you have to release a second year former fourth round pick, but the players that were in front of Watkins just outperformed him according to Kelly.

Staying with the secondary, many people were surprised to find out that safety Jerome Couplin made the team. Couplin missed time due to an appendicitis, but still managed to show Chip enough to keep him on the team. The safety spot is a position that desperately needs quality depth, hopefully Jerome can provide that.

One big name of late that wasn’t cut was running back Kenjon Barner. Barner was a monster as a punt returner, looked good as a running back, and also caught the ball very well. It was almost impossible to show more than what Barner had shown. Chip Kelly shared this same sentiment as he spoke about how Kenjon earned his spot on the 53 man roster.

Towards the end of the press conference, Chip also gave a update on some players that have missed time due to injury. This is actually a little shocking considering Chip hates to talk about injuries and timetables and stuff of that nature.

The Philadelphia Eagles are now set, for the most part, with their final roster. There were some surprises here and there but overall the roster looks to be very solid and there are some positions that have very solid depth. Chip Kelly seems happy for now with the roster but mentioned that any chance they get to get better, they’ll take it. Of course Chip Kelly danced his way out of certain questions and was extremely sarcastic as only Chip Kelly can do, but answered some tough questions and is now preparing for the Atlanta Falcons come September 14th.
