17 Eagles are given Thursday afternoon rest days as Philly prepares for finale

Philly's injury reports run a tad long these days, but with the NFC East already clinched and bigger goals ahead, we can forgive them.

17 weeks of the Philadelphia Eagles season and 16 games have led us to a 13-3 record. It all comes down to one more contest before the NFL Playoffs begin. This one is a home date vs. the hated New York Giants. As is often the case, Philly will wear their all-black ensembles for that one.

Saquon will 'probably' sit. That's what head coach Nick Sirianni said. With that, we close the book on his march toward Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record... 'Probably'... We're just joshing you. We see no scenario where the starters play in this one.

It doesn't even appear as though they're getting ready. Many of the starters took a knee at the most recent practice session.

The Eagles release their Thursday afternoon injury report. 17 guys enjoy some rest.

Thursday's injury report carried 23 names. Fear not, the Birds are relatively healthy. They're just resting guys with the postseason looming, 17 of them to be exact.

Among those resting were Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, and DeVonta Smith. The latter two are also recovering from knee and wrist issues respectively.

There were five nonparticipants in total. Rounding out the list of nonparticipants were the top two quarterbacks on Philly's depth chart.

Jalen Hurts is still in the NFL's concussion protocol, He also has a left finger injury. Kenny Pickett is healing from a rib issue.

The remaining 14 Birds that are resting were all listed as limited participants. All are starters. Five were recently named as Pro Bowlers. You can make the argument that many of the rest of the guys below who weren't given the nod were snubbed and probably should have been:

  • Zack Baun (Pro Bowler)
  • Mekhi Becton
  • Reed Blankenship
  • Jalen Carter (Pro Bowler)
  • Cooper DeJean
  • Landon Dickerson (Pro Bowler)
  • C.J. Gardner-Johnson
  • Lane Johnson (Pro Bowler)
  • Cam Jurgens (Pro Bowler)
  • Jordan Mailata
  • Quinyon Mitchell
  • Darius Slay
  • Nolan Smith
  • Josh Sweat

Nakobe Dean (abdomen), Dallas Goedert (knee), Bryce Huff (wrist), and Will Shipley (concussion) rounded out Thursday's injury report. Goedert is still working through his practice window and waiting to be elevated back to the active roster. Dean and Shipley sat out of the Week 17 game vs. the Dallas Cowboys. Both should be ready by the postseason.

Here's the full report. We expect a status report by Friday evening.
