Philadelphia Eagles Control Their Own Destiny
Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports
The Philadelphia Eagles have found themselves in a very particular situation, they can control their own destiny. The Eagles don’t need to rely on other teams and tiebreakers for now, instead if they can continue their high performance throughout the rest of the season, they can possibly earn a first round bye and another division crown.
At the beginning of the season people were not sure of this current Philadelphia Eagles squad. Some thought Eagles head coach Chip Kelly was just a flash in the pan, or the departure of wide receiver DeSean Jackson was too much of a gamble. Even when the season started, and the team was winning ugly and losing offensive linemen by the daily, people were still questioning this teams talent and potential.

Thirteen weeks in, the Philadelphia Eagles are tied for the best record in the entire league. After a shaky start, a beat up o-line, a struggling running back, a broken clavicle to your starting QB, and a secondary that has been up and down, this Eagles team is 9-3.If you were to go back to the beginning of the season and someone were to tell you that all these misfortunes were to happen, you would think the Eagles would be worse than the Washington Redskins. The Eagles currently have the power to potentially put a strangle hold on a one or two seed in the playoffs if they can win out their remaining games.
This is no easy task. Philadelphia currently sits third overall in the NFC standings, and have a rough couple of weeks coming up. The team has Seattle this week, and another showdown with Dallas the following week. This is a key stretch for the team, if they can pull it out, it would send a huge message. Green Bay and Arizona are ahead, but with Packers up and down play on the road, and the Cardinals looking terrible without their starting QB, the Eagles have a golden opportunity to make a run heading into the playoffs. This of course sounds great now, but it all falls on the Eagles shoulders to make it happen and keep winning.
With the Philadelphia’s most recent win over the Dallas Cowboys, this also puts the Eagles in the drivers seat to run away with the NFC East division. The division title is critical as well because whoever wins the division is guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. Even if a first round bye is out of reach, a home playoff game is the next best thing. It’s a tight race, so if the Eagles cant hold their end of the deal, a division title might be the teams only saving grace.
I personally questioned this teams mental and physical toughness after the blowout loss to Green Bay a couple weeks back. I said that I was not sure if the team can ever reach its full potential. This still remains to be seen, but the Philadelphia Eagles are definitely on the right track. The team is getting healthier, which is rare this late in the season, and bounced back nicely after the loss to the Packers with two straight dominating performances. It’s a great feeling to know that the Eagles could potentially own a first round bye. We can all talk the talk, but its time now for the Philadelphia Eagles to walk the walk. The Eagles have the inside track, and have control over their own destiny. The only thing left to do is just go play football. Bring on Seattle.
