What Would a Grade A Draft Have Looked Like for the Eagles?
By Jesse Shuter
Round 5 (Pick 153): Christian Westerman OG, Arizona State
Original Pick: Wendell Smallwood RB, West Virginia
The more I hear about Smallwood the more I wonder why he was picked. Yes, he led the Big 12 in rushing. Yes, he has a skill set for the modern NFL. Yes, Ryan Mathews is injury prone. However, a running back drafted in the fifth round is not expected to have a large role. The way this draft went, there was talent just as interesting in the seventh and even undrafted.
The Eagles have bigger needs, and especially with the UDFA addition of Byron Marshall, there was no reason to spend a precious draft pick, the Eagles third choice on a running back unlikely to be on the team in three years.
Especially with passing on Seumalo, Westerman is the clear choice and frankly on draft day even if they had taken Seumalo this pick would have made a lot of sense.
Westerman was one of the top ranked guards in this draft, and the top ranked guard by some. He has a ton of talent, great measurables and an endless motor. He would likely have won the Eagles left guard job and had the potential to one day develop into their right tackle.
