It must really suck to be backup quarterback Chase Daniel right now. Rookie quarterback Carson Wentz seems to have an entire city and fanbase behind him. Following a night where Daniel was sacked multiple times in his first appearance for the Philadelphia Eagles, it appears that all the discussion has shifted to how great Wentz is. Then there’s talk about how the Eagles made the right decision and how Daniel may have been nothing more than a rookie head coach’s security blanket. It appears that Daniel is now in a no-win situation, but there’s still three games to go.
Eagles
Head coach Doug Pederson pulled the starters after three plays that just so happened to end up in a touchdown. Whether that was the right move or not continues to be debated days later. It’s true that they ended the drive on a positive note, and that gives the team some momentum heading into another week of practice. It’s also true that they probably could have used a little more work seeing as how drives typically aren’t going to start in the other team’s red zone.
Still, Daniel and Wentz both saw some extended time in the first pre-season game. Daniel struggled, and the ever-growing shadow that is Carson Wentz hovered over him for the entire duration of his first appearance in an Eagles jersey as fans chanted for Wentz to replace Daniel on the field.
Despite throwing an interception, everyone’s pleased with Wentz as he showed athleticism that Daniel lacked (hence the multiple sacks). He also seemed relatively comfortable and displayed a solid showing for a rookie. Make sure to find any audio you can of long-time Eagles play-by-play announcer Merrill Reese. You’ll want to hear him calling the Wentz highlights as only he can. You’ll be doing yourself a favor by checking them out.

Things won’t get any easier for Daniel. Think about something for a moment. The starters won’t play the final game of the pre-season and, as mentioned earlier, they only played three plays of the first game. Daniel will be on the field for a while on September 1st. Expect a few more chants for Wentz and possibly a few boos if he’s still struggling at that point. Yes, it’s a pre-season game, but you know this fanbase is anxious. Wat’s funny is the starter, Sam Bradford, may escape the heckling altogether.
