Ranking the Eagles’ 5 strongest position groups heading into 2017
Quarterback
Obviously, the Eagles have their starting QB in Carson Wentz, who is the future of the franchise.
Wentz looks to improve upon a solid rookie campaign in 2016. Given his talent and the front office giving him some new weapons, the future looks bright for Wentz.
Heaven forbid Wentz ever goes down, the Eagles luckily have a very serviceable backup in Nick Foles, who was brought back to the team that drafted him in 2012. When Foles was a starter for the Eagles, he had his share of success. In 2013, Foles threw 27 touchdowns to only 2 interceptions and was selected to the 2013 Pro Bowl. Oh, and how could we forget his NFL record 7 touchdown passes against the Oakland Raiders?
Though Foles fizzled out with the Los Angeles Rams, he found a role as a quality backup with the Kansas City Chiefs. When Alex Smith suffered a concussion in a Week 8 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, Foles led the the Chiefs to victory as well as winning their next game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Also, Foles has had some familiarity with Eagles Head Coach Doug Pederson,as Pederson served as the Eagles’ QB Coach in Foles’ rookie year.
It’s also worth mentioning that the Eagles added veteran back-up Matt McGloin as well. McGloin has played in 13 games as well starting in 7 games for the Raiders, most recently filling in for Derek Carr, who suffered a season-ending leg injury.
Despite already having a franchise QB in place, it’s good to know that he has backup if something were to happen to him.
