3 Realistic expectations for Donnel Pumphrey’s rookie campaign

2. Receiving

As was mentioned previously, the Eagles drafted Pumphrey in large part because of his versatility. Over his four-year collegiate career, Pumphrey totaled over 1,000 yards receiving and 10.5 yards per reception. Combine that with his 6,000+ yards rushing, and you have a guy that has the potential to be a real playmaker at the profesional level.

Normally, Pumphrey would be seen as a clear choice for a third-down back. The presence of Sproles pushes Pumphrey to second on the depth chart in that regard. The argument could be made that Sproles is the best third down back in NFL history, so the Eagles will find ways to create opportunities for him.

Expect Pumphrey to come in to spell Sproles every now and then, but Sproles will continue to be a top receiving threat on the team. With that being said, 250-350 yards receiving for Pumphrey would not be out of the question.
