The Eagles situation at cornerback is worse than we thought

As we are two weeks into training camp, the Eagles situation at cornerback is beyond a problem now.

When the Philadelphia Eagles focused on offense in free agency, we expected the cornerback situation to be bad. After a week and a half of training camp, help is needed at cornerback and it’s needed now! When the Eagles signed Patrick Robinson to a one-year deal, no one expected him to come in and be a shutdown corner. He was expected to come in and be the veteran help that could teach the young guys the ropes. Unfortunately, Robinson has struggled more than the rookies have, and it’s worse than we thought.

After Tuesday’s practice, Robinson admitted that he was struggling. This kind of play is expected from a rookie, but not from a veteran who is heading into his eighth season. Robinson started off camp as the first-team cornerback alongside second-year veteran Jalen Mills. What is unfortunate is that Robinson has not only been getting burnt by the first-team but second and third-team as well.

Recently, Robinson spoke up.

"“I think the last two practices, I gave up way too many deep balls,” Robinson said. “I’m sitting and guessing, really, on those deep balls. A lot of times I’m just sitting and guessing.“I have to stop doing that. That’s something I have to work on. I really have to stay focused and play the right technique. It’s pretty simple. It’s just staying focused on your assignment and playing sound technique football.”"

All of this is obviously easier said than done. The part that worries fans the most is the fact that the market for cornerbacks is almost empty. Aside from one name, Darrelle Revis, there isn’t much help out there that could be better than Robinson. Eagles executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman may have to get on the phone and work on a deal to get this team the help that it needs.

As for head coach Doug Pederson, he says that he likes the situation that the Eagles have at cornerback. That may come as a surprise. We all have to understand that Pederson has to say things like that. What kind of coach would he be if he didn’t believe in his guys? Then again, we can’t forget that he also said they were looking for help at corner early last week.

There hasn’t been any word yet on how that search is going, but with a pre-season game being one week away, the Eagles have to find someone who can get thrown onto the field ASAP.  When and if they find help, Robinson may have to pick things up or he could be packing his belongings at the end of August.
