A great run:

Matthews’ numbers over his first three seasons mirror many of the all-time greats at the position. If they were to keep him, the Eagles simply wouldn’t have been able to pay Matthews the money he wanted with an already tight situation with their salary cap.

The numbers can be misleading with Matthews. Playing primarily out of the slot allows for easier match ups as the majority of teams keep their best cornerbacks on the outside.

Stats also don’t tell the entire story for Matthews. During his time in Philly, Eagles quarterbacks had limited options. Sam Bradford, Mark Sanchez and Carson Wentz all were forced to rely on short and intermediate routes over the middle of the field. That allowed Matthews to thrive in his first three years in the league.
