Running Back

On paper, the Eagles look set at running back for 2018. Both Jay Ajayi and Corey Clement look to build on their success in 2017, and Darren Sproles will be returning from injury. Heading into 2019, things get a little murky.

This year will most likely be Sproles’ last year. He was expected to retire last year, but decided to return after suffering a season ending injury in 2017. Even if he doesn’t retire after this season, he’s still set to become a free agent. If he’s healthy, he can be a huge part of the offense. Still, the Eagles would have to think twice about offering an extension.

Ajayi is also set to become a free agent in 2019 as well. His performance in the upcoming season will determine whether the team will want to offer him an extension or not. He’s a productive player entering the prime of his career, but there have been concerns about his knees.

This would leave Corey Clement as the most experienced running back on the roster. Wendell Smallwood has spent time on the injured list and in the coach’s dog house, and the team doesn’t know what it has yet in Donnel Pumphrey.

If Ajayi is signed long-term then the team is in good shape. If not, then the team will have to address the position in the draft. It’s either that, or pay more than they probably would like in free agency.
