Linebacker

If there was one position that could potentially be seen as Philly’s weakest, it’s linebacker. This isn’t a knock on the talent at the position. It’s more about depth and the durability. Everybody knows that when Jordan Hicks is healthy, he’s a Pro Bowl-caliber player. Still, he’s seen two season-ending injuries in three seasons. Combine that with the fact that he is set to become a free agent in 2019, and the Eagles might need to start planning for the future. The depth behind him hasn’t been very durable either. Joe Walker has shown flashes when given the chance, but has been placed on Philly’s injured reserve list the last two seasons.

Nigel Bradham is the only other LB that is signed long-term that has legitimate starting experience. Since Mychal Kendricks was released, the next most experienced players are guys like Corey Nelson and Kamu Grugier-Hill. Nothing against either player, but they haven’t been asked to play a significant role on defense as of late. Even so, Nelson is set to be a free agent in 2019 and Grugier-Hill will be one in 2020.

Nathan Gerry may be able to take a significant step in his development. At least, that’s what fans and coaches are hoping for, but the Eagles will need to reload at this position to stay in serious contention.
