Former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Mychal Kendricks facing serious charges
Former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Mychal Kendricks is being charged with insider trading.
Call it a bad decision, chalk it up to karma, or whatever, but not too long after slamming some of his former Philadelphia Eagles teammates, the winds of bad fortune blew Mychal Kendricks‘ yacht completely off course. He’s being charged with insider trading by the federal government.
Philly made Kendricks the 46th-overall pick in 2012’s version of the NFL Draft. He played all of his six initial seasons with ‘The Birds’ before a hefty contract number and what may have been Philly’s disinterest in re-signing him made him a cap casualty this past offseason.
His recent comments about his former teammates shouldn’t come as a surprise. Last season, he was very vocal about his desire to leave the Eagles in his rear-view mirror.
All of that pales in comparison to the news that blindsided most of us on Wednesday morning.
U.S. Attorney William McSwain made the announcement, and FOX29 in Philly were among those who were broadcasting the press conference on live television ( fast forward to about the 33-minute mark):
Damilare Sonoiki was also named in the charges. Some of you may know him for being a writer for the hit television show Black-ish.
According to those investigating the case, Sonoiki provided Kendricks with information including details that were not made available to the public. This included about four corporate acquisitions, namely private information about his clients’ pending mergers and acquisitions. This happened approximately somewhere between between July of 2014 and November of 2014.
Kendricks made over $1 million by using that information to to buy securities in the companies that were about to be acquired. At that point, he’d, then, sell those securities, resulting in a profit after mergers were announced.
In return, according to everyone investigating this issue, Sonoiki was provided with benefits, including tickets to Eagles home games and about $10,000 in cash.
Copies of Mychal Kendricks’ statement can be found all over Twitter, so it’s difficult to ascertain who released it first, but here’s what was written. This comes courtesy of the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport:
Kendricks put pen to paper on a one-year deal with the Cleveland Browns on June 5th of 2018. That was supposed to pay him $2,250,000. That included a signing bonus of $500,000 and guaranteed him $500,000.
He’ll, now, probably see none of that. The Browns released a statement shortly after lunchtime:
Just like that, a promising career has probably, in all likelihood, come to a screeching halt. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.
