Avonte Maddox, CB/S

Avonte Maddox got his first real taste of NFL game action last week, and the circumstances couldn’t be any more unfortunate for the cornerback. Throughout the entire offseason, the Eagles had Maddox competing for a spot in the nickel with Sidney Jones. When Jones won the battle, Maddox remained on the shelf as the season begun.

Now, with Rodney McLeod out, the Eagles needed to find another safety to implement into their heavy rotation along with Corey Graham and Malcolm Jenkins. Since Maddox had a solid camp, the Eagles figured they could use him instead of searching for someone else.

Had this happened a month or two ago, we would probably feel better about it. But it being an emergency situation makes me a bit nervous since Maddox has never played safety before last week. We should have faith in Maddox since he is a solid player. But he is going to be tested big time this week. The Vikings have not one, but two excellent receivers on board and the Eagles need the secondary to step it up this week. If they don’t, expect another long day.
