NFC East Rumors: Jason Garrett to be extended by the Dallas Cowboys?

The Philadelphia Eagles have not seen the last of Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett in 2018.

The 2018 NFL season has been an eventful one. While the Philadelphia Eagles have struggled to stay relevant in the NFC playoff picture throughout the year, a lot has changed within the division. Early on, the Dallas Cowboys were becoming the laughing stock of the division. Their offensive coordinator Scott Linehan was expecting to be fired at any moment, while their head coach Jason Garrett was likely to be on the hot seat by the end of the season as well.

As the Cowboys are currently the NFC East champions and headed to the divisional round of the playoffs, it looks like Jerry Jones and the Cowboys front office has had a change of heart. The turnaround by Garrett and company has been impressive, no doubt. But is it worth holding onto the head coach for another long-term stint?

Garrett has been the Cowboys head coach since 2010. Looking at his history as the head coach, there isn’t much to be impressed with. Since completely taking over in 2011, Garrett has only had three winning seasons, which all resulted in divisional round losses in the playoffs. This week, the Cowboys will face the Los Angeles Rams for their third divisional rounded appearance during Garrett’s time as the head coach. And as many thought this could be their last with Garrett in charge, it apparently won’t be.

The Cowboys to extend Jason Garrett?

According to Grant Gordon of ‘Around the NFL,’ the Dallas Cowboys have every intention of extending their head coach after the season is up. So, regardless of the outcome on Saturday against the Rams, the Cowboys have seen enough in Garrett to consider him the long term answer still for the organization. Although he is currently under contract for the 2019 season as well, Dallas doesn’t seem to have any intentions on waiting to see what happens.

"“I’m told the Cowboys are positive that Garrett is going to be their coach going forward,” Rapoport said on Good Morning Football: Weekend, “and after the season when this all ends, they do intend to begin negotiating a long-term extension with Garrett.”"

For the Eagles, this is good news. While the Cowboys ended up sweeping Philly this season, the long-term idea of having Garrett in the division is still a winning situation for the Eagles. You know those 8-8 jokes about Garrett and the Cowboys aren’t made up, right? He’s turned in three consecutive 8-8 years, along with a 4-12 season in 2015 as well. Having only three winning seasons out of eight total isn’t extension worthy in the eyes of many teams, but the Cowboys seem to be happy, so the Eagles should be too.
