Philadelphia Eagles: 15 best free agent acquisitions of all-time
By Randy Gurzi
A star at North Carolina, defensive end William Fuller began his career with the Philadelphia Stars of the USFL. He played for them for two seasons (one of which was when they became the Baltimore Stars) before joining the then-Houston Oilers, where he played for eight years.
Then in 1994, the 271-pound defensive end decided he wanted to be closer to his home in Virginia and signed with the Eagles on a three-year deal. His contract was worth $8 million total. It seems like a steal now, but was a decent contract at the time. There was still some concern given the fact he was 32 years old when he came to Philadelphia.
Fuller was a great signing, despite coming over late in his career. He had a fantastic run with the Eagles, as highlighted by Reuben Frank of NBC Sports.
"“William Fuller joined the Eagles late in his career, but he still put together three very good seasons with 9½, 13 and 13 sacks from 1994 through 1996. Fuller is one of only six players in NFL history with 9½ or more sacks three straight years after his 32nd birthday. His 35½ sacks after turning 32 are more than twice as many as anybody else in Eagles history (Darren Howard: 16½).” — Frank, NBC Sports"
Fuller made the Pro Bowl all three seasons he was with Philadelphia. He then finished his career by playing two more seasons with the then-San Diego Chargers. He wasn’t nearly as effective for the Bolts, recording just six sacks combined in 29 games in San Diego.
