Ronald Darby, CB

Re-signed on a one-year deal

The Eagles brought back one of their own after he tested the waters of Free Agency. Ronald Darby reportedly had multiple offers on the table that were considered to be long-term. He also took a visit with the Kansas City Chiefs the night before he decided that he was going to get back into Philly. With that, Ronald Darby is back on the Eagles with a one-year deal worth $8.5 million.

The idea of having Darby back doesn’t seem all that bad since it’s not some mega deal. But this move definitely has some of us scratching our heads. First off, the Eagles have a ton of young talent at cornerback. Although none of these guys are considered to be in an ‘elite’ status right now, some promise has been shown over the last season. Darby has had his flashes like the rest of them, but he’s only proven one thing – he struggles to stay healthy.

In 2017, Darby appeared in only eight games for the Eagles. The following year? He was out after nine weeks of play. Seeing as though Darby tore his ACL later on in the year, he may not be ready to start the 2019 season off on time, which adds the third consecutive year that Darby misses time with the Eagles. So why exactly did they bring him back?

The cornerback situation is strange, and frankly, it doesn’t make much sense. Unless the Eagles truly have a plan to keep Darby for the long-term moving forward, this was a puzzling move that could hurt the development of the other young guys on board. There has to be something else going on, that includes a potential change of position, or a trade for one of these other guys. For now, though, we’re not all that thrilled about this move.
