Philadelphia Eagles: A return to kelly green jerseys?
You didn’t think you were the only person who missed those kelly green Philadelphia Eagles jerseys did you? Jeffrey Lurie has a target date for their return.
Jeffrey Lurie isn’t just the chairman and CEO of the Philadelphia Eagles. He’s one of the team’s biggest fans. We can always use one conversation piece as evidence of that. It may not come up in every conversation, but it comes up enough.
Is there anyway possible that the Eagles can bring back those kelly green jerseys?
There have been certain hindrances, like the NFL‘s ‘one-shell’ rule, a rule that only allows each professional football franchise to don one helmet. Philly’s transitioned to the midnight green style of jersey back in 1996, and to be honest, if we look from a fashion standpoint only, it seems ridiculous to rock the darker colored helmet with a lighter shade of green as the color choice for the jersey.
The topic of Philly being able to use their kelly green jerseys has come up before, but again, there was that ‘one-shell’ thing. The Eagles brass drew up a rule proposal back in 2017 that would allow teams to use multiple helmets, but they withdrew said proposal before it reached a vote.
It appears the boss’ nostalgia is getting the best of him though, and Mr. Lurie is again thinking back to the days of NFL Championships in 1960 or, more recently, the days when Clyde Simmons, Reggie White, and Randall Cunningham were running around.
Don’t expect to see the kelly green jerseys in 2019’s regular season, but there’s a chance they might pop up soon. According to Lurie, the target date is now 2020’s season.
Here’s a quote:
Not satisfied? Here are the boss’ exact words:
"We’re working on that hard, it’s a priority. I don’t know if it’ll get done for the 2019 season, but I have some hopes for the 2020 season."
It’s just something about those kelly green jerseys. Just like it’s something about the silver and black in Oakland or those ‘powder blue’ jerseys the Chargers once wore in San Diego, but don’t take our word for it. Just ask one former and one current Eagles legend.
Enough said. Fingers are crossed all over Eagles nation. There are quite a few fans who are hoping this is a deal that can get done.
