Philadelphia Eagles: Their 7 best and worst backup QBs of the last 30 years
The 7th best: Jim McMahon
The 1991 Eagles had arguably the greatest single-season performance in the history of NFL defenses. Randall Cunningham was looked at as a potential league MVP after his performance in 1990, but he tore up his knee in Green Bay on opening day in 1991, thanks to a low hit by the Packers’ Bryce Paup.
Enter Jim McMahon who Sports Illustrated dubbed, “The Masked Marvel” that season. The former Chicago Bears Super Bowl champion had a career renaissance. He went 8-3 in 11 starts. The Eagles finished 10-6 but ultimately missed the playoffs (sound familiar?).
McMahon would also go on to win the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award. The thing was, the oft-injured McMahon was sidelined in week 5 and didn’t come back until week 10, and was lost again, this time for the season, in week 15. More on that later.
