Doug Pederson may have ended the Super Bowl drought, and Buck Shaw may have brought the team an NFL Championship in 1960, but only Earl “Greasy” Neale can lay claim to coaching the Eagles to multiple championships.

After falling in the 1947 NFL Championship Game against the Chicago Cardinals, Neale guided the Eagles to back-to-back championships in 1948, and 1949. Both were won in shutout fashion. The final scores were 7-0 and 14-0 against those same Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams respectively.

The 1948 game was played in a blizzard while the 1949 game was played in a driving rainstorm, turning the field into a thick mud pit. Neale took it in stride and coached his team with great aplomb, closing the decade with two titles.

Neale was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame in 1969 and the Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame in 1987. He bests some pretty stiff competition, Andy Reid for example, and he gets the nod on this list. Oh, you want to know why?

Think about something. His overall win-loss total isn’t heart-stopping. He only coached 111 games, going 63-43-5 in the process. Doug Pederson’s story isn’t finished being written yet, so with that being said, ask yourself a question. If the Eagles need to win a big game, and you need one guy to coach them in that game, who are you going with, Neale or Andy Reid?
