Philadelphia Eagles: 5 Brilliant trades during Doug Pederson’s tenure
1. Philly makes two trades to wind up with the second-overall selection in 2016.
Perhaps the greatest move in the Doug Pederson era involved two trades that wound up with them being in a place to find their franchise quarterback of the future. On March 9th of that year, ‘The Birds’ traded a cornerback who never showed any promise in an Eagles jersey, Byron Maxwell, a linebacker who’s known more for being the guy that sat in the roster spot LeSean McCoy should have been occupying, Kiko Alonso, and the 13th overall pick in that year’s draft to the Miami Dolphins for the 8th-overall selection in the draft.
For most teams, that would have been enough. It wasn’t enough for Philly. A little over a month later, on April 20th, they traded their first, third, and fourth-round picks in 2016, along with their 2017 first-round pick and their 2018 second-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for the second-overall pick the 2016 NFL Draft.
Everyone in the Eagles fan base knows what happened next. They wound up taking Carson Wentz. The story is still be written, but if he continues to stay healthy, Carson Wentz could break every Eagles passing record.
Most of us have heard this phrase before. If you have the opportunity to get your franchise quarterback, you go get him. Philly did that, and if Wentz delivers another Lombardi Trophy to Philly and goes on to become everything that we think he is, this won’t just be the best trade (or trades) of the Pederson era. These will forever be known as the greatest trades in the Eagles’ history.
