September 24th, 2017: The kick that started a championship run

No one wanted to give Jake Eliott a shot. The Cincinnati Bengals had been given up on him. The phone wasn’t ringing until one day when Philly was forced to place their kicker, Caleb Sturgis, on the team’s IR (injured reserve).

In his first appearance with the team, he was successful on both extra-point attempts, and he went two for three on field-goal attempts. It seems like that was forever ago, but regardless of how Jake Eliott’s career turns out, he’ll always be remembered for two reasons.

He made the kick that helped put Super Bowl LII away for the Philadelphia Eagles, and a little over four months before there was ever a Super Bowl for Philly to play in, he made a kick that helped get the championship run going.

On September 24th of 2017, a 1-1 Eagles squad faced off with the 0-2 Giants. The game evolved as any typical Eagles-Giants game would. There were twists, and there were turns before Carson Wentz hit Alshon Jeffery along the sideline to set up an opportunity for a 61-yard game-winner. There isn’t an Eagles fan on the planet that doesn’t know what happened next.

You’re probably wondering how seven games could possibly top this moment in Eagles’ history, but there are. Elliott’s kick helped jumpstart a run for the ages. 14 years earlier, there was a punt return that saved the season.
