The case for and against the Dallas Cowboys.

The whole Ron Rivera to the ‘Dallas Cowboys‘ idea dies with one name, Jerry Jones. Does anybody remember that story where the Dallas Cowboys were in their draft war room and he asked Jimmy Johnson to behave as though he was getting input from good old Jerry when the cameras were running?

Johnson didn’t like that. Nor should he. Since Jones bought the team, the Cowboys have been great when they had a coach who was an independent thinker. The Cowboys were at their best when they had Bill Parcells and Jimmy Johnson.

Sure, Parcells didn’t win anything of note, but the team was better. It didn’t make you sick to watch them play. The problem with the Cowboys now and the problem that they will always have is their owner has to be the star. How many times must we watch a Cowboys game and see Jerry Jones’ reaction to everything? How many times are we going to spend a week talking about something Jones said to a radio host or a television show?

Does Jones want the Cowboys to win? He absolutely does, and he should be commended for that. The issue is Jones wants to be and has to be the reason for the success, and it’s for that reason that Rivera wouldn’t work in ‘Big D’. He’d actually be the reason for the Cowboys’ success. Let’s take Dallas off the list. Rivera just dealt with David Tepper, a Jerry Jones in the making. He probably won’t want a run with the original.
