10 UTR Philadelphia Eagles and how they help a playoff push
By Hunter Doyle
6. Nathan Gerry, linebacker
In his third NFL season, Nathan Gerry has made huge strides. After being an afterthought on the linebacker depth chart and contributing on special teams only, the former Nebraska safety has developed into a defensive playmaker and bonafide starter on defense for the Eagles.
When Nigel Bradham missed time earlier this year, Gerry took his place as the guy who called the defensive signals. Schwartz trusts his ability on the field. Gerry prepares well and puts in the extra work to help this team. While there have been questions about which players on this team truly care, Gerry’s preparation and effort have never been in question.
He has two interceptions on the 2019 season, one of which came in the red zone against the Atlanta Falcons and helped shift momentum. The other was a pick-six that set the tone in a blowout win against the New York Jets. Gerry consistently makes great reads and breaks quickly on routes and designed run plays.
This season, he is third on the Eagles in total tackles with 55 and third in solo tackles with 32. Not to mention, he’s added 2.5 sacks, five tackles for loss, three pass deflections, and a fumble recovery. With Kamu Grugier-Hill is out this week in concussion protocol, Gerry will have a much bigger role. Expect to see him step up again and do everything in his power to get this team to the playoffs.
