6. November 24th, 1957: Sonny Jergensen’s first start

1957 was a tough year for the ‘Birds’ as they posted a 4-8 record and failed to qualify for the postseason, but there were some nice moments, including a game where the Eagles fourth-round pick of that season’s preceding draft, Duke University‘s Sonny Jurgensen earned his spot as the Eagles starting quarterback and ran into those doggone Redskins in his first game.

Jurgensen would lead a season split with Philly’s rivals, winning his debut but losing in his first attempt at a season sweep. It’s hard to thumb your nose at three touchdowns and 211 yards passing in a rookie quarterback’s debut though. Philly won by a 21-12 margin, and the Jergensen era was off and running.

Wow. Jergensen was a fourth-round draft choice? There must not have been any Twitter or YouTube clips to pull up back then, huh?
