5. The 1947 regular-season opener is a shootout, but the right team came out on top.

The Eagles went 10-8-2 during the 40s versus their friends from the District of Columbia, but one of the more contested games of this rivalry came in the 1947 season opener. The Redskins gave Philly all that they could handle in the first regular-season game for both teams, but in the end, the right team won as Philly held on for a 45-42 victory.

How about this for some names? This one was highlighted by a five-touchdown performance by Redskins legend Sammy Baugh and a 94-yard kickoff return by Eddie Saenz, but that’s not all. One of the greatest Eagles ever, Steve Van Buren, scored on a 95-yard kickoff return, and Eagles quarterback Tommy Thompson threw three touchdown passes for the ‘Birds’.

Hey, does anybody have any film of that one?
