Philadelphia Eagles flashbacks: Philly’s 10 best victories over Washington
3. September 17th, 1989: 5 touchdown passes from Randall in a rally
Was 1989 the greatest season of the Buddy Ryan era? Well, we won’t go that far. The Eagles didn’t even win the division that season, but it sure was fun!
Okay, Vick! We see your four-touchdown passing performance, and we raise you one five-touchdown soiree by Randall Cunningham. In ‘greatest game’ countdowns, it’s hard to ignore late-game rallies and shootouts, and on September 18th of 1989, Eagles fans got both.
It seemed like it might be a long day as Gary Clark beat Eagles legend Eric Allen and hauled in one for an 80-yard touchdown strike. One bad snap on an extra point later, D.C. was up 6-0, and that was just the first play of the game.
Washington would go up by a score of 20-0 before Philly could get anything going.
This one had everything, big leads, a 16-point halftime deficit, and some Eagles magic as Philly charged back on a multiple-touchdown performance by Cunningham as a 77-yard return after a lateral on an Eagles fumble recovery set up Cunningham’s final magic trick, a last-minute touchdown pass to Keith Jackson, Cunningham’s fifth touchdown pass of the game.
Yeah, the Monday Night Massacre was a thing of beauty, but come-from-behind victories trump everything.
