December 28th. 2008: Eagles: 44, Cowboys: 6

Even now, the events of December 28th of 2008 are difficult to explain. It’s probably better suited for an episode of Unsolved Mysteries. When the day began, the Eagles needed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears both to lose in the 1 P.M. EST window to have any shot of making the postseason.

They both lost.

That meant if the Eagles could take care of their own business versus the hated Cowboys, they’d take ownership of the sixth seed in the NFC Playoffs. There isn’t anyone in the Delaware Valley or any Eagles fan anywhere else on the planet that doesn’t know what happened next.

Just say the words ’44 to six’ to any Eagles fan, and you’ll see a smile on his or her face. Say the same to any Cowboys fan, and they’ll look at you like you just summoned The Candyman. Terrell Owens never wore that ugly blue and grey jersey again.
