January 11th of 1981: Eagles: 20, Cowboys: 7

So, the story goes Eagles head coach Dick Vermeil walked into the room and asked his team a question before answering it himself. ‘What’s it going to take to beat the Dallas Cowboys’? His answer? ‘Just another 24 hours!’

Then, Vermeil turned and walked out of the room.

This one released a lot of frustration as the Philadelphia Eagles had lost 22 of 26 games to the Cowboys from 1968 to 1980, but they wouldn’t lose this one.

Philly elected to wear their white jerseys, forcing Dallas to wear their cursed blue ensembles. For you younger ‘Birds’ and Cowboys fans, that’s a superstition of the so-called ‘America’s Team’ that dates back to Super Bowl V.

Traditionally, whenever Dallas has worn their blue jerseys, especially in big games, things haven’t gone well. This game did nothing to debunk that theory as not too long into this one, Wilbert Montgomery ripped one up the gut for a long touchdown run early.

With much of the first quarter remaining, it was clear. There was no way the Eagles were going to lose that game. A 20-7 final score made it official. The first NFC Championship Game at Veterans Stadium would send Philly to their first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.
