54. . . . 589, 8,978, 79. 2. player

As much as we call the NFL Draft a crapshoot, here’s something that will make you feel better about the recent missed opportunities slightly. NFL teams and their scouts have been screwing up the selection process for decades. How’s this for a laugh? Harold Carmichael was a seventh-round draft choice and the 161st player taken in the 1971 NFL Draft.

Talk about exceeding expectations.

Let’s give you the resume one more time. Harold Carmichael is the Philadelphia Eagles’ all-time leader in receptions with 589 snags. Harold Carmichael is also the Eagles’ all-time leader in receiving yards with 8,978 of those. Mr. Carmichael is also the franchise record holder for touchdown receptions. Count them up. He has 79 of those for his career.

It sounds cliche to say things like this now, but it would be wonderful to see what he’d do in a more offensive-centered league. Imagine free releases for this guy!

Carmichael earned four Pro Bowl nods in his 14-year NFL career (1973, 1978–1980). He’s a three-time second-team All-Pro (1973, 1979, 1980). He led the NFL in receiving yards and receptions in 1973. He’s a member of the NFL 1970s All-Decade Team, the Philadelphia Eagles 75th-anniversary team, and the Eagles Hall of Fame. He’ll never be forgotten by Birds fans, and now, he’ll have a bust in Canton, but all of this pales in comparison to one thing Eagles fans will always love about him.
