Philadelphia Eagles rookie report cards: Who’s hot, who’s not so hot
By now, you’ve no doubt seen that the backup quarterback position is one of immense importance at every level of organized football. Don’t think that’s a fact that’s been lost on Eagles chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie, who said prior to 2019’s NFL Draft that he desired that his team selects a quarterback in every NFL Draft going forward.
From the boss’ lips to the brass’ ears. The Eagles took former Northwestern Wildcats signal-caller Clayton Thorson with the 167th-overall selection in Round 5 almost a year ago. How did that work out?
Philly parted ways with the man who was supposed to compete for the third-string roster spot after the preseason and, instead, they went with a 40-year-old journeyman quarterback who was coaching high school football in Charlotte, North Carolina.
That says just about everything that needs to be said about Clayton Thorson. It was the right theory by Mr. Lurie. Philly just took the wrong guy. Thorson never threw a pass in a regular-season game for the ‘Birds’ and is currently a member of the Dallas Cowboys. It looks like they’ll be using one of those picks on a signal-caller again.
