5 surprise standouts Philadelphia Eagles need to develop for 2020
By Erin Grugan
During the 2018 season, Dallas Goedert made a name for himself while in the shadow of veteran tight end Zach Ertz, grabbing 33 receptions for 334 yards, moving the chains 15 times, and finding the end zone four times for the ‘Birds’.
However, looking back to the summer of 2019, the focus at the tight end position was Ertz. In fact, the only time Goedert was featured in the headlines before the kickoff of the regular season was after suffering a calf injury that ended his preseason in August.
Goedert would end up joining his team on the field for the opening weekend of the regular season, and Philadelphia was grateful for that. Though he had a slow start in the first few weeks, he ended the season nearly doubling his production from his rookie campaign, with 607 receiving yards on 58 catches, five touchdowns and a whopping 33 first downs in the regular season. He continued to shine in his first playoff outing in January with 73 yards on seven receptions for four first downs in the Eagles’ playoff loss to the Seahawks.
With Ertz’s body getting more beat up as the years go on and again considering the lack of receivers the Eagles this season, having a player like Goedert to provide a reliable set of hands and consistent production was and will continue to be a major factor in the success of this Philadelphia team.
