Adding Eric Berry isn’t an option Philadelphia Eagles should ignore
Here are a few of the immediate reactions.
The immediate reactions if you’re a Birds fan are probably around the area of ‘Wait. I thought the idea was to get younger.’, ‘We already have to pay big-name guys like Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod‘ and ‘How much could this guy possibly have left?’.
All of those questions have credence. Still, here’s something else to consider. With the potential to have somewhere around $45 million in cap space and a potential ten picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, Eagles vice president and general manager Howie Roseman has never had a better opportunity to beef up this Eagles roster or more flexibility with which to work.
Remember when we all knew we had to get some wide receivers for Wentz but it looked like there was no money to do so prior to 2017’s season? Do you also remember how Roseman managed to land both Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith when most of us would have been happy to get one or the other and we thought there was no way, cap-wise, that anything like that could happen?
No one manages the salary cap like Howie, and now, he has the most wiggle room that he’s ever had. Yes, Berry’s had his share of serious injuries, and the ability to keep players on the field has been a huge area of concern for Philly as of late (partially because this is an aging roster).
Still, all of the injuries that the Eagles have had to deal with haven’t been injuries that have been suffered by the old guys. The young guys have gotten hurt too. Think Carson Wentz, Jordan Hicks, Mack Hollins, and Corey Clement. Philly’s issues with injuries are simply a byproduct of the fact that so many of their players are aging.
