4 Philadelphia Eagles who need to have a breakout season in 2020
By Hunter Doyle
The defensive line’s play was underwhelming at times this past season. Fletcher Cox was still a monster, but he wasn’t his usual self as a pass rusher. Losing Malik Jackson for the year was a big part of that. Then, there’s Derek Barnett. He didn’t exactly progress as expected, and Timmy Jernigan seemed invisible at times. All of that hurt the team as a whole.
Josh Sweat was one of the bright spots. Playing just 35 percent of the Eagles’ defensive snaps, Sweat still finished with four sacks, ten hits on the quarterback, 15 total pressures, and seven tackles for a loss of yardage. For a guy who was fourth on the depth chart at defensive end, those are some impressive marks.
Philly’s defensive line is going to look different next season with a new coach. Brandon Graham has consistently gotten pressure every year and is one of the most consistent Eagles in the stat department, but he also turns 32 years old at the start of the season. Vinny Curry was productive as the third defensive end towards the end of the year in big moments, but there’s a high chance that he might not be re-signed in the offseason.
Barnett will be in his contract year, and that means that this is his last chance to showcase why he was a first-round selection. If he struggles, Sweat could have an opportunity to get more time. If Barnett keeps his starting position, Sweat could fill in to complete the rotation and fill in on passing downs (much like Chris Long did in his time in Philly).
Don’t be surprised if Sweat becomes one of the Eagles stars next season and has a memorable 2020 campaign.
