3 Reasons JJ Arcega-Whiteside deserves a pass from Eagles fans
3. Some of you don’t know how bad Carson Walch was.
Carson Walch was relieved of his duties as Philly’s wide receivers coach at the close of the 2019-2020 season along with the team’s offensive coordinator, making him the fourth wide receivers coach to be relieved of his duties since the Doug Pederson era began in 2016.
At the time of this story being published, no other NFL team has hired him to serve in any capacity with their franchise or players. Jason Garrett got a job. Heck, Mike Groh‘s even employed (he’s now the wide receivers coach with the Indianapolis Colts), but there’s a flatline on Walch.
He was awful in 2019. He was obviously in over his head, and not only did he fail Arcega-Whiteside, but most of the Eagles receivers also failed or regressed under his leadership. Any positive signs of life came from the result of the players’ own efforts, and Walch can’t take any credit for that. You can argue that the wide receiver grouping was the worst unit on this team.
Remember Walch was the guy that said Mack Hollins was doing a good job because he lined up properly. Now, ask yourself a question. What rookie can succeed with that type of leadership? Some of you know people who succeed at their jobs because the company is already successful and because there are talented people leading them or working around them, but for some reason, you think the NFL is different.
You think every player will succeed in spite of the ignorance around them. No, JJ didn’t stop any presses but had Metcalf been here, he wouldn’t have either. Carson Wentz wasn’t to blame. Carson Walch was (partially), and those of you who are angry with JJ need to chill, take a moment and breathe. Let’s see how he does under Aaron Moorehead. Gosh, we hope this guy is good.
