Revisiting, grading every WR Philadelphia Eagles have drafted since 2010
42nd-overall selection (2014)
Okay, this works! In 2014, the Philadelphia Eagles were entering an era of uncertainty. For the first time in 15 seasons, the ‘Birds’ were putting a new face on the sideline, a man who would go on to be fired by two NFL franchises, the legendary Chip Kelly.
As much as we like to pick on him, Kelly did draft Zach Ertz, Jordan Hicks, and Lane Johnson (and he found Beau Allen in the seventh round of 2014’s draft), but he also made some major snafus with Ed Reynolds and JaCorey Shepherd.
If you poll Eagles fans, the voters are split on their view of Jordan Matthews. Many remember that he was traded for Ronald Darby, and he had a second run in Philly that produced four receptions for 33 yards. Many of those same fans forget that first run, one where he was one of the security blankets for Nick Foles, Mark Sanchez, Sam Bradford, and Carson Wentz.
In 62 career games with the ‘Birds’, Matthews played in 62 games and started in 40 of them. He hauled in 249 receptions for 3,006 yards and 21 touchdowns. Matthews’ legacy in Philly is up for debate but know this. If Philly can find another Jordan Matthews in 2020’s draft, that’s a major win for the franchise. Grade: B-
