Philadelphia Eagles: 2 Responses to 3 huge comments by Doug Pederson
Does it feel like this team is kicking an unusually long freestyle?
We’re on the doorstep of the NFL Combine. Evaluation of both free agents and the incoming class of potential future NFL stars is the name of the game. The wide receiver and cornerback positions are hot topics among Eagles fans, but to get an idea of what the Eagles brass is thinking, Spadaro asked coach Pederson to identify an area of need.
As you might imagine, he was quite vague.
"I think we’re going to add talent. Honestly, we’re going to add depth. You can look across the board. No position is immune. You hear the talk about, ‘Okay, we need receivers or, or we need, you know, offensive line.’ Well, you know, we’re going to try to do that anyway, and that’s all part of our process but we’re going to evaluate our roster currently. We’re going to evaluate the free agent players. We’re going to evaluate the draft and that whole process, and we’re going to add depth."
There are two ways that you can look at this.
Here’s the good news.
Philly’s got the right man for the job in terms of a head coach. In 2016, he elevated the Eagles out of the garbage bin Chip Kelly left them in, and he almost led the team to a .500 record. The next year, he won the Super Bowl.
Throughout the 2018 and 2019 seasons, Coach Pederson watched his team get ravaged by injury and he led makeshift rosters within one drive of a second-straight NFC Championship Game appearance to conclude the 2018-2019 season before leading his team to a division title a year later. Let’s give the guy some credit. He knows what he’s doing.
Here’s the not-so-good news.
Sometimes, it seems like Coach isn’t being vague. Sometimes, it feels like he’s just grasping at straws. It almost feels like the words “I have no idea, but we’ll figure this thing out” are dangerously close to falling off of his lips.
What’s worse is if he said it, you could throw that phrase seamlessly into every one of his press conferences. Look, the reasons to trust him are obvious. He does know what he’s doing, but sometimes, despite all of the positives, it seems like he’s a tad stubborn. Why else wouldn’t he hire
