5 Philadelphia Eagles NFL Draft do-overs from Doug Pederson’s era
4. Were Derek Barnett and Sidney Jones the right choices?
Had Sidney Jones not ruptured his Achilles at the Washington Huskies‘ Pro Day in 2017, he would have been a first-round selection in that year’s draft. Instead, he slid, and the Eagles had an idea.
They’d take a gamble on Jones, knowing full well that he’d probably redshirt during his first season, and though he progressed and healed more quickly than any of us could have ever anticipated, there hasn’t been much to cheer for.
Outside of two big plays versus the New York Giants in two different games down the stretch of 2019 and outside of that pass breakup in the Week 16 games versus the Dallas Cowboys last season, Jones hasn’t done much to shout about.
Derek Barnett was Philly’s first-round choice that same season, and though he’s made key plays at key moments, there hasn’t been enough to substantiate the 14th-overall selection the Eagles used on him. Don’t look now, but 2020 will be a make-or-break year for him. It wasn’t supposed to be that way.
Philly passed on defensive ends Takkarist McKinley and Jonathan Allen and cornerback Tre’Davious White with Barnett’s selection. They missed out on the likes of cornerback Chidobe Awuzie and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster with the selection of Jones. Somebody, please hit a reset button.
