5 Philadelphia Eagles NFL Draft do-overs from Doug Pederson’s era
5. Here comes the D.K. Metcalf versus JJ Arcega-Whiteside discussion.
If we’re going to talk about the D.K. Metcalf versus JJ Arcega-Whiteside argument we have to be fair. Every year of the Doug Pederson era has seen a different wide receivers coach, and in many ways, the one that they employed in 2019 was the worst of the bunch.
We’re talking about the guy who said that Mack Hollins was doing a good job for the team because he lined up properly and played hard.
Until he explodes and proves that he was just a late bloomer or a victim of bad coaching, JJ Arcega-Whiteside’s career will always be tied to that of Metcalf’s, at least in the minds of Eagles fans. The Seattle Seahawks landed Metcalf with the 2018 draft’s 64th-overall selection. That’s just seven spots after Philly took “JJAW”.
Metcalf snagged 58 receptions for 900 yards and seven trips to the end zone. Arcega-Whiteside caught ten passes for 169 yards and a single score, but here’s something to mull over. As bad as the coaching was at times for Philly, there’s no guarantee that Metcalf wouldn’t have struggled in Philly’s system as well. Carson Walch was a nightmare.
Much is expected of Philly’s second selection in Round 2 of 2019’s draft as we all move forward going forward, and now that they have a more capable wide receivers coach in Aaron Moorehead, we should all see improvement. It’s still going to be hard to convince most of the fanbase and the media that Metcalf wasn’t the right guy at 57. He was better than Arcega-Whiteside at the collegiate level, and he still appears to be better than “JJAW” now.
