How did Philly screw this one up?

Though it doesn’t get talked about as often as the Metcalf versus Arcega-Whiteside debate, Gardner Minshew II was still on the board and selected by the Jaguars just eleven picks after Philly took Thorson. “Minshew Mania” was in full effect in Jacksonville early on in 2019. While it didn’t last, he showed enough for the Jaguars to feel comfortable with him being a backup for the foreseeable future. Minshew certainly made out better in Jacksonville then he would have in Philly in terms of potential playing time.

The Eagles will likely be looking for another backup to compete with Sudfeld, and they might have to draft another quarterback to do so. Eagles chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie already stated that he wouldn’t mind if Philly took a quarterback in every selection meeting. They missed on this one.

In his rookie year, Minshew’s finished with a 6-6 record in 12 starts as he threw for 3,271 yards with 21 touchdowns versus only five interceptions. He wound up with a 60.6 completion percentage on the process.

In college, Minshew left no doubts about his ability. He transferred to Washington State as a junior and played in Mike Leach‘s air-raid offense. In 13 games, he led the Cougars to an 11-2 record and they finished tenth in the final rankings. He threw for 4,779 yards with 38 touchdowns, nine interceptions, and a 70.7-percent completion percentage.

That, for some reason, still wasn’t enough for the Eagles to take him in the fifth round. It’s still puzzling to this day why they opted for Thorson. They ended up paying for it quickly. Sure, hindsight is seen in 20-20 vision, but the Eagles definitely should have taken a mulligan on this one if they could.
